How did you decide to work for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School?
In 1993 I had applied for a seasonal position in admissions to work with struggling teens. I was looking for work that was complementary to my career path and the “temporary” position fit while I looked for a full time job in the area. There are many “lives” to my journey with HIOBS. After serving as a seasonal course advisor for the struggling teens courses, I became a medical screener, then course advisor for that population – and then a full time course advisor! I also worked for Outward Bound Professional and our Sea Program.
What is your role at HIOBS?
Now, I am the Director of Admissions. Our job in Admissions is to get the right students on the right courses and prepare the students as much as possible to have a successful course. Aside from the secondary goal of filling all programs, our main goal is to fill the courses with appropriate students that will benefit from the experience and education we offer. The most difficult aspect is trying to explain to students and parents the magic that is Outward Bound.
What do you like best about working for HIOBS?
I love working with the students, the community, the mission…….being a part of something positive for our world.
Choose one word to sum up HIOBS.
One word is difficult….special….unique….tenacious.
When you are not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Baking, Gardening, traveling, horseback riding…..time with family…
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I love snorkeling in warm water anywhere!
