1969 ringer t-shirts tattered and torn at the collar, pins lost in garbage disposals or off backpacks, course certificates damaged and wrinkled by water and faded by time—these mementos all have a deeper meaning, a hidden story, because of the experiences we live through on a Hurricane Island Outward Bound School course. We love hearing from our alumni. Your stories and memories give us the opportunity to reflect on the work we have continued to do since 1964. More often than not, our alumni reach out to us because they are compelled to pay their experience on course forward, to repay the kindness of their scholarship or to help someone who otherwise couldn’t afford to have the opportunity to face the challenges that HIOBS offers. One such alumni is the North Haven painter Eric Hopkins, who was on H-6 on Hurricane in the summer of 1967 when he was just 16. This past summer, Eric hosted an event at his gallery to showcase his most recent painting of Hurricane Island and to give 25% of all sales to our scholarship fund. Hear his reasons why:
We are so fortunate to have such incredibly generous support of our alumni. It gives tremendous meaning to the season of giving. Thank you for a wonderful 2019 and we wish you all peace, happiness, and health in 2020!
