This course focuses on developing the personal, group leadership and technical skills necessary to begin a career as an instructor or expedition leader in water based environments. Outward Bound’s leadership curriculum is comprehensive and time tested. You will refine the way you meet challenges and opportunities, relate to others and view your world. Technical skill development is a robust and challenging component of this semester program. Whether you want to pursue a career as a guide or outdoor educator, or simply be more proficient and safe when traveling with friends and family, you will expand your skill base through the instruction of experienced specialists in these skill sets.
You will be able to earn US and internationally recognized certifications in:
During our expedition, there are no showers, no bathrooms, no telephones, no television, or many other modern luxuries that you may be accustomed to. You should come to your course physically and emotionally prepared for and excited about devoting all of your time and energy to your course, your group, and your Outward Bound experience.
Arriving physically fit enhances your experience and ability to do well on the course and ultimately allows you to take full advantage of the expedition. No experience is necessary: we teach you everything you need to know.
Your course area in the Florida Keys is home to numerous birds and abundant marine life, is rich with the confluence of water flowing out of the Everglades into inner Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The waterways are shallow and intricate, providing an exciting cruising area for Outward Bound’s nimble shallow-draft sailboats.
Sailing courses cruise in three general areas. The backcountry offers challenging shoal draft navigation and the opportunity to explore mangrove keys, tidal flats and coral patch reefs. The Atlantic side offers excellent snorkeling at the outer reefs and open water sailing. The Everglades has beautiful sand beaches and a maze of rivers and bays to explore. Throughout the region, the turquoise waters, warm temperatures and prevailing easterly winds provide exceptional sailing, both day and night! Actual itineraries are based on weather, currents and length of course.
In Florida the HIOBS course area regions are the ancestral lands of the Seminole, Matecumbe, Cuchiyaga and Guarungumbe nations.
The course area in Costa Rica has a variety of climates including tropical dry forest, rainforest, and cloud forest. Due to its mountainous landscape and tropical rainfall, Costa Rica boasts more whitewater rivers than any other country of its size. The warm tropical rivers cut through lush tropical rainforests and create an ideal rafting playground. From the rivers, the group will head to the beach for the surfing phase. The Pacific Ocean provides Costa Rica with exceptional surf conditions year-round for beginner to advanced surfers during our surf section.
In Costa Rica our course area regions are the ancestral lands of the Chorotega, Malécu, Rama, Bostos, Nicarao/Nahoa, Huetar, Tjer-di/Teribe Broram, Brunka, Bribri, Buglé and Ngäbé nations
In Panama, the course area includes The Bocas del Torro archipelago, which is located near the Caribbean border with Costa Rica. The islands are home to a rich, heterogeneous culture including the indigenous Guaymi-Ngobe people who are direct descendants of the original inhabitants of these islands and the afro-Caribbean Bastimentenos. Several small communities and outlying homesteads will host the group as the crew explores the region in expedition sea kayaks. The Guaymi-Ngobe community on the island of Solarte is the staging ground for the SCUBA element of the course.
In Panama our course area regions are the ancestral lands of the Guna Yala, Guna of Wargandí, Emberá/Eperara/Épera, and Wounaan nations.
An important part of this Outward Bound course is our leadership curriculum. Beyond lessons and discussions about leadership, students will practice the art of leadership. Throughout the course students will be put in charge of leading their group through a variety of activities and discussions. Believing that leaders must be able to teach and present in front of a group, our instructors place an emphasis on developing teaching skills. Throughout the semester, you will have the chance to teach several lessons during the course.
Service projects are often incorporated into Outward Bound courses through coordination with local land managers, conservation groups, government agencies, or social service agencies. While on expedition, students are encouraged to practice service to the environment and their team by sharing responsibilities and following Leave No Trace ethics throughout the course.
The Solo experience provides an important break from the rigors of the expedition and gives students the opportunity to reflect on their Outward Bound experience. With sufficient food and equipment, students will set up camp at their own sites, using the wilderness skills learned during the first half or two-thirds of the course. The solo will be up to 72 hours on a long course like this.
Often located along beautiful shorelines or peaceful rivers, campsites are chosen to offer as much solitude as possible (yet be within emergency whistle-signaling distance of other group members). Most students spend their Solo time journaling, drawing, or just thinking and resting as they process lessons of the course to focus on their goals for the future. Instructors check on each participant at least daily.
As the course progresses, the instructors work to hand over responsibility for leadership of the expedition to you and your teammates. Throughout this semester your group will have multiple opportunities to put your technical and leadership skills to the test by taking on all of the challenges and rewards that are a part of planning and executing a successful expedition in each of the skills areas. Your culminating final will allow your group to organize and undertake an expedition and prove to yourselves that you are ready to navigate, cook and set up camp yourselves, motivate each other, sort out differences of opinion, push through challenges, and work together to safely achieve each day’s travel goal.
Our 30-foot sailboats are built with challenging expeditions in mind, being fully equipped with all the required US Coast Guard safety equipment (radios, lights, etc). Our open boats encourage teamwork and leadership like no other classroom. On a boat with no cabin and no engine, students live closely with the other students using only wind and oars as propulsion. As students rotate responsibilities during this expedition, they learn the crafts of maneuvering under sail, coastal navigation, rowing and living aboard a small open boat. At night, students sleep on deck under a tarp, taking turns at anchor watch under brilliant night skies.
As your group learns to operate as a cohesive crew, you will have many opportunities to explore the infinite facets of wilderness leadership. The last section of the sailing phase will provide you with your first opportunity to put these and your new technical skills to the test: your instructors will remove themselves from all routine decision making and you and your crew will take on the responsibilities of the expedition for yourselves.
After your sailing expedition and before leaving the United States, you’ll take a four-day training in backcountry First Aid. The Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) course is an introduction to wilderness medicine that combines classroom time with hands-on practical sessions. Students will learn how to manage injuries/illnesses in the backcountry, setting them up for safe and self-reliant expeditions in the future
The Pacific Ocean provides Costa Rica with exceptional surf conditions year-round for beginner to advanced surfers. On the surf expedition the group will camp, cook, hike and surf together. Part of each day during surf camp will be spent providing service in the local community. The group spends a week on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, living on the beach and learning to surf. Surf training begins on the sand, learning about waves, surfboards, and how to stand. From there students move out to smaller breaking waves to develop their balance and timing. As their skills progress, they eventually paddle out for some of the larger surf. Students with previous surfing experience may progress faster. In addition to surfing, the group volunteers at nature preserves or wildlife rescue centers along the coast.
During whitewater training students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to paddle class two, three, and possibly four rapids. For two weeks the group follows the water around Costa Rica, paddling several rivers and setting out on one-day trips, and two to four-day expeditions. Depending on water levels, students paddle in inflatable kayaks or rafts. During this section, students complete their Whitewater Rescue Technician course. The Whitewater Rescue Technician (WRT) course is designed specifically for professional guides, private boaters, fish and game personnel, and others who work or play on or around flowing water. Students benefit from intensive, hands-on course experience and learn to use techniques and simple equipment to assess and perform river rescues. The emphasis is on speedy, low-tech and improvised rescue techniques that are effective and require minimal equipment.
The final phase of the program is located in Panama where your group will learn two technical skills, SCUBA diving and sea kayak expeditioning.
The Bocas del Toro archipelago is a tropical island paradise consisting of some 68 islands located near the Caribbean border with Costa Rica. The islands are home to a rich, heterogeneous culture including the indigenous Guaymi-Ngobe people who are direct descendants of the original inhabitants of these islands and the afro-Caribbean Bastimentenos. The SCUBA diving is remarkable in this area, with great biodiversity and thriving coral habitats.
This section begins with one to two days planning and packing for the expedition as well as practicing paddling and rescues. During this expedition, instructors will train the group in the skills of kayak-based expedition travel. This section has a strong cultural immersion component interacting with many of the villages of the Indigenous Ngäbe people within this tropical lagoon. The Ngäbe communicate in both Spanish and their traditional language, Ngäbere, of which there are only about 2,000 fluent speakers left in the world, and their dwellings are typically constructed on stilts over the water with grass-thatched roofs. Several small communities and outlying homesteads will host your group as you camp and explore the region via expedition sea kayaks.

On your HIOBS program, you will learn four important Outward Bound Core Values:
Some of the most important lessons you take home are learning about yourself and your community while acquiring backcountry skills and having an adventure. As you will be traveling through wild places on your expedition, you’ll also learn to protect and appreciate the unique, unspoiled environments through which you travel.
Our Gap Year and Semester expeditions are designed to provide opportunities for students to develop wilderness skills, to practice and learn about teamwork, and to foster each individual's leadership abilities. These programs combine the rigor of a series of adventurous expeditions with the interpersonal challenges of living in a small community - which takes resiliency, character, and the determination to succeed through collaboration, compassion, and effort.
Amidst rugged natural landscapes, you are given the opportunity to learn to lead and to follow, to adjust plans to changing realities, give and receive honest feedback, and earn the confidence borne of hard-won achievement. Our Outward Bound instructors coach students to step outside their perceived limitations, to assess risks, and to work together on expedition to achieve more than they thought possible - and also to find ways to transfer these "a-ha" moments back to life at home, work and school.
In the wilderness, you can take the opportunity to unplug from your everyday life, practice these skills, and along the way build amazing new connections that will serve you wherever you go.
You need to be physically fit, and motivated to live, learn and work together within your expedition team. You will need to be ready to work and live with crew mates with different views and values from all different parts of the country and world. No previous wilderness travel or camping experience is necessary—all travel and leadership skills are taught from the beginning, and each day of the expedition builds on the previous one.
