How did you decide to work for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School?
I had always dreamed about learning to sail. After five years of instructing sea kayaking and backpacking in Washington, I had the opportunity to try sailing in Florida. After my first night on the boat, I knew that I was hooked.
What is your role at HIOBS (what do you do)?
I am a course director and an instructor.
What do you like best about working for HIOBS?
I love that on a typical work day I can feel that I am living life to the fullest . My favorite days are the ones that our minds, bodies and spirits are challenged by some grand adventure, then we settle down for the night and suddenly everyone gets super silly. We could be eating burnt rice and yet everyone is laughing with their heart open, having the time of their life.
What is your favorite or funniest HIOBS memory?
My favorite moment, so far, happened last winter on the Keys to Costa Rica Semester. During the sailing section in Florida Bay we anchored next to a coral reef to do some snorkeling. There were so many sea creatures that it was like swimming through an episode of the Blue Planet Series. There was something amazing to discover each way we turned.

When you are not at work, what do you enjoy doing (what are your hobbies)?
I spend a lot of my time experiencing different cultures through travel and volunteering. Quality time with my family and friends is very important to me. I also love gardening, reading, dancing, yoga, meditation and just about every sport that involves water.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
Hmm… probably that I almost became an accountant.
