Here, at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS), our staff are the heart and soul of our school—from the team of people behind the scenes, to the field staff who put incredible care and dedication into every program. Their leadership, technical abilities, and adept educator skills add depth to the course experience and provide for the safety of our students. Field staff return time and time again to work for HIOBS because of the lives they’ve touched, the friendships they’ve built, and the continuous inspiration and professional development that our community provides.
As an organization that prides itself on serving our students to the highest degree, we seek experienced professionals - administrators, student services representatives, educators, field instructors, guides, outdoor enthusiasts, and group managers to join our ranks.

The Instructor position is an entry-level instructional role. Instructors will work primarily with students 13-18 years of age on expeditionary courses that have a primary course element of sailing, canoeing, backpacking, or sea kayaking. This level position is also intended to prepare individuals for the Lead Instructor role in either our Land or Sea Programs.
The Logistics position is a support role. Logisticians help instructors and groups going out on course to prepare everything - from gear to food. They also provide transportation for groups of students to trail-heads and put-ins.
Individuals interested in working for HIOBS for the 2022 season are encouraged to submit an application at any time.
Please download and complete the HIOBS Field Staff Application, and then email it to our Staffing Coordinator, Suzanne Pierce, at [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all the positions are filled, typically by the end of March.
