When and why did you decide to take an Hurricane Island Outward Bound School program?
I decided in the spring of 2008 to take an Outward Bound semester course because I wanted a challenge.
What was the most unexpected thing about your course?
The most unexpected aspect of my Outward Bound course was just how quickly and effectively my instructors turned the course over to us students. They set the tone from day one that the course was “ours” and they were going to turn as much over to us as possible.
What was your favorite part of the course?
This would have to be a tie between making lifelong friends and turning me on to the idea that the outdoors can serve as one of the very best classrooms.
How did you feel at the end of the program?
Proud, tired, stinky, happy, and thankful.
How did your learnings from course extend to your life back home?
One of the great things about Outward Bound is the idea of transference, what is learned in the wilderness can be directly applied to life at home, at work, or at school. I use the leadership skills and communication skills that I learned on course every day in both my personal and professional life.
What has been your biggest takeaway from Outward Bound?
A positive attitude in life goes a very long way.
Why should others consider a HIOBS semester program over other semester programs?
There is something that makes an Outward Bound semester different from the rest. Outward Bound not only teaches technical skills and leadership but they also teach things like compassion and respect for others. It tells a lot about a school’s identity when they value kindness and compassion and respect on the same level as technical skills and leadership. As cool as all the technical skills I took away from my semester are, I use the patience and the compassion for others daily while I don’t get to practice my whitewater rescue skills in the office.
Why did you decide to work for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School?
I knew I wanted to work for Outward Bound before I even finished my semester. I was drawn to the tight community and the ability to help people find their potential. I have worked for Outward bound as an assistant instructor, as a lead instructor, as a senior watch officer, and my current role with custom programs and marketing.
