Maeve started working at HIOBS as a Sea Instructor in the summer of 2022. A long-time outdoor enthusiast, she was in the market for something new and decided to try out working in the field as a sailing instructor. Maeve took some time to chat with us about her time thus far!
1. Out of all the outdoor education opportunities out there, why did you choose to work at HIOBS?
I chose to work for HIOBS because I love sailing. The opportunity to do expedition-based sailing was something I was very intrigued by! I also love the focus on social and emotional learning that Outward Bound has.
2. What would you say are the best parts of your job? What are the most challenging, and what have you learned from them?
The best parts of my job are having the opportunity to be out on the water every day and camp on a pulling boat. I also love the fun and inspiring instructors I get to work with! I love the community of Outward Bound staff as well as the sense of community that is fostered among students on the boats. Every day is new and exciting.
3. What would you tell your friends and colleagues who are thinking about applying to work for Outward Bound?
I would tell my friends and colleagues that it is an incredible opportunity to learn technical/interpersonal skills and more about yourself. It is also a fun and rewarding job that is full of adventure!
